According to Bethesda’s Senior Vice President of Global Marketing and Communications, Pete Hines, the company intends to release The Elder Scrolls: Legends in a way that would offer both cross-platform play and progression across all available platforms when it comes to consoles. With the digital trading card game having already released for both PC and mobile, the publisher and developer wants the integrity of the gameplay to remain the same on all versions. As Hines put it:
While Hines never explicitly mentions Sony, as many gaming fans may be aware, the Japanese tech conglomerate’s policies regarding crossplay are rather rigid, with previous instances such as its decision to not let Fortnite crossplay occur with Nintendo Switch or Xbox One. Should Sony continue to maintain such practices, then there’s a fair chance that The Elder Scrolls: Legends won’t release on PlayStation platforms, as the Bethesda SVP of Global Marketing said that the terms regarding crossplay for the title “are essentially non-negotiable.”
So, all things considered, unless Sony decides to become more open to the idea of allowing its games on PlayStation to have crossplay components with Nintendo and Microsoft consoles, it’s likely that The Elder Scroll: Legends won’t be getting a PS4 release. Then again, Hines has said that Bethesda is continuing its talks with all of its various platform partners when it comes to the issue, so there’s a chance – albeit a slim one – that Sony changes its mind.
The Elder Scrolls: Legends is available now on Android, iOS, Windows, and Mac, and is currently slated to release for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One later this year.
