Since the advent of the original Demon’s Souls, FromSoftware’s approach to storytelling has been somewhat obtuse. Rather than relying on fleshed-out exposition and dialogue, FromSoftware tends to focus on the player’s discovery of certain aspects of the in-game world more than the history of said aspects. That same sentiment also applies to the story of Elden Ring. So for fans of the game who are looking for a clearer understanding of the narrative, the director of Elden Ring has provided answers.

In an interview with Famitsu, Hidetaka Miyazaki, the director of Elden Ring, has provided a detailed explanation of the story events and worldbuilding for players unfamiliar with the nuances of Elden Ring’s narrative. The story takes place in a world called the Lands Between, where most of the populous possess a golden glow in their eyes, which represents the grace of the Erdtree, the gigantic golden tree that players have likely seen in the background of most in-game environments.

The player is a member of a group of individuals called the Tarnished, who have since lost the grace of the Erdtree and were exiled from the Lands Between. At some point in time, the Elden Ring had been shattered and handed off to various demigods, which served as the catalyst for the Shattering War, with each demigod vying for the title of Elden Lord.

Once the Shattering War began, the “guidance of grace” was presented to members of the Tarnished to help guide them back to the Lands Between in order to pursue the title of Elden Lord. All the while, players will have to face off against the aforementioned demigods, which includes Godrick the Grafted, one of the most popular bosses in Elden Ring.

Miyazaki later went on to explain that all additional story details will have to be discovered by the player in-game. While there are likely plenty of additional lore details presented within Elden Ring that might cause confusion, this background information should help players a lot. Considering George RR Martin’s involvement in Elden Ring, there’s understandably a lot of people that wish to engage with the game’s story.

Elden Ring is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
